Muthenthaler
Martin Muthenthaler farms some of the highest, hardest vineyards in the Wachau, up in the Spitzer Graben where the nights are cold, the slopes are steep, and nothing comes easy. A former truck driver for Domaine Wachau, he took over his family’s vines and now works quietly and precisely—organically, by hand, without shortcuts. The wines reflect the place and the man: focused, mineral, stripped of excess. No gloss, no trend-chasing—just pure Grüner and Riesling with clarity, structure, and tension that cuts through the noise.
Farming Note
Martin farms organically across 3.5 hectares of steep terraces—hard, physical work done by hand. The soils are varied: orthogneiss, mica schist, gneiss, amphibolite, quartz, and feldspar. No herbicides, no chemicals, just precision farming in a brutal climate. It’s not romantic—it’s real, and it shows in the wines.
Winemaking
Vinification is as low-intervention as it gets. Native yeast ferments in stainless steel and used barrels. No additions aside from minimal sulfur. Nothing forced. Martin’s goal is clarity and structure, not weight or roundness. These wines are built on energy, not polish.
