Forteresse de Berrye
A medieval fortress turned working estate, Forteresse de Berrye sits on Saumur’s tuffeau limestone slopes. Gilles and Sandra Colinet are bringing the vineyards back to life, farming organically and fostering biodiversity. The wines are defined by the soil—Chenin Blanc with razor-sharp minerality and Cabernet Franc that’s structured yet fresh. The cellar work is patient and simple, with native fermentations and long aging. These are Loire wines with quiet precision, built to evolve.
Farming Note
Forteresse de Berrye farms with care and sustainability in the heart of Saumur, where vines are rooted in tuffeau limestone, a porous, chalky soil unique to the region. These soils provide excellent drainage and reflect the cool Loire climate, encouraging slow, balanced ripening. Farming practices prioritize biodiversity, soil vitality, and ecological harmony, allowing both Chenin Blanc and Cabernet Franc to express the elegance and structure of their terroir.
Winemaking
All fruit is hand-harvested and vinified with a minimal-intervention philosophy. Fermentation occurs in neutral vessels to preserve varietal purity and highlight the region’s mineral-driven character. Aging is slow and deliberate, with neutral oak used for reds to build texture, and a restrained approach throughout to ensure clarity, finesse, and a true sense of place in every bottle.
